Start with a major one-day Classic such as Paris-Roubaix Femmes or Tour of Flanders Women if you want a complete contest in one sitting. Choose the Tour de France Femmes, Giro d’Italia Women or La Vuelta Femenina if you prefer a general-classification battle over several days.
Some women’s races revolve around cobbled climbs or white gravel roads. Others build toward an overall winner through successive stages. Championship races award a world title or an Olympic medal. Each asks something different of the riders, and what you follow as a spectator changes with it.
Which women’s cycling races are the biggest?

The shortlist covers three stage races, a group of one-day Classics, and the titles contested at the World Championships and Olympic Games. It reflects sporting status, history and race character, and it is an editorial shortlist, not an official UCI ranking of prestige.
| Major race | Format | Defining character |
|---|---|---|
| Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift | Stage race | Major French general-classification race |
| Giro d’Italia Women | Stage race | Long Italian history, climbing challenges |
| La Vuelta Femenina | Stage race | Spanish race with an overall classification |
| Tour of Flanders Women | One-day Classic | Cobbled Belgian climbs |
| Paris-Roubaix Femmes | One-day Classic | Rough pavé, velodrome finish |
| Milano-Sanremo Women | One-day Classic | Long tactical approach to the Cipressa and Poggio |
| Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes | One-day Classic | Ardennes climbs |
| Strade Bianche Donne | One-day Classic | Tuscan white gravel, Siena finish |
| Trofeo Alfredo Binda | One-day Classic | Hilly racing around Cittiglio |
| UCI Road Worlds and Olympic road race | Championships | World-title or Olympic-medal stakes beyond the regular WorldTour series |

Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition and La Flèche Wallonne Femmes also belong on the wider one-day watchlist.
One spectator on r/peloton, familiar with men’s professional cycling and beginning to explore the women’s scene, wrote: “I’d like to check out the most significant and entertaining women’s road races of the past”.
What makes a race major: WorldTour, Classics and championship titles

A race can be major because of its place on the top calendar, its history, its terrain or a championship title. Those criteria overlap, so two events with different origins can both belong among the sport’s headline races.
The UCI Women’s WorldTour is the leading series of professional women’s road events. It brings together one-day races and multi-stage competitions. A Classic is a one-day race with its own winner. A stage race also produces an overall result across multiple days.
The UCI Road World Championships award a world title and the rainbow jersey. The Olympic women’s road race awards Olympic medals. Riders in both race for their nations.
A parent looking for a primer said their daughter was getting into road cycling and wanted to start watching the women’s pro tour.

Women’s Classics have histories of their own. Trofeo Alfredo Binda became an established women’s race around Cittiglio, independent of the men’s Classics. Milano-Sanremo’s women’s race returned in 2025 after the earlier La Primavera Rosa editions held from 1999 to 2005.
You’ll see the word Monument in discussions of prestigious Classics. It comes from men’s road racing, and writers sometimes apply it to the biggest women’s races.
The three headline stage races: Tour de France Femmes, Giro and Vuelta

The Tour de France Femmes, Giro d’Italia Women and La Vuelta Femenina are the major multi-day races. Each produces an overall winner through general classification, or GC, which ranks riders by accumulated time across stages.
That creates two contests in one event. A rider can win a stage on a given day while another leads the overall standings. Mountain stages and other changes in terrain shift the time gaps, so an early leader still has work to do. All three run shorter than the traditional three-week men’s Grand Tours.
Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift
The modern Tour de France Femmes began in 2022, when Annemiek van Vleuten won its inaugural modern edition. Riders contest the overall title across successive stages in France.
You follow it by watching how the standings respond to each stage. A rider can look dominant on one finish and still face a different test when the route favors climbing.

Giro d’Italia Women
The Giro has the longer history of the two. Climbing drives it, and the mountain stages are where the overall order changes.
La Vuelta Femenina
La Vuelta Femenina developed from the shorter Challenge by La Vuelta into a multi-day event. It has its own overall standings and stage winners. The UCI scheduled the 2027 edition for autumn.
Tour of Britain Women, Itzulia Women and Tour de Suisse Women are important additional stage races.
The cobbled Classics and tactical spring headliners

Tour of Flanders Women is built on repeated cobbled climbs, including Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg. Steep gradients and position in the peloton shape the race.
Paris-Roubaix Femmes puts riders on rough pavé sectors and tests endurance over punishing surfaces before the finish in the Roubaix velodrome. Lizzie Deignan won its inaugural women’s edition in 2021.
Milano-Sanremo Women builds toward the Cipressa and Poggio, where late positioning and attacks decide the outcome of a long one-day race.
Gravel, Ardennes hills and historic women’s Classics

Strade Bianche Donne runs on Tuscany’s white gravel roads and finishes in Siena. The loose surface demands something different from paved climbs.
Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes is one of the hilly Ardennes Classics. Climbs such as La Redoute bring sustained efforts and attacks as the gradient keeps changing.
La Flèche Wallonne Femmes finishes on the Mur de Huy, a steep climb that rewards precisely timed uphill effort. Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition is hilly racing in the Netherlands, with the Cauberg among its best-known landmarks.

Trofeo Alfredo Binda is hilly racing around Cittiglio.
One-day Classics vs stage races vs championships: what are you following?

A win means something different in each format.
| Competition | Main result | What a spectator follows | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-day Classic | Winner of a single race | Breakaways, positioning, attacks and the finish | Flanders, Roubaix, Strade Bianche |
| Stage race | Overall GC by accumulated time, plus stage winners | Time gaps, climbs, stage results and standings | Tour de France Femmes, Giro, Vuelta |
| UCI Road World Championship | World title | National representation and rainbow-jersey stakes | Women’s road race at Worlds |
| Olympic road race | Olympic medal result | National representation and the medal contest | Women’s Olympic road race |

Which women’s race should you watch first?

In a one-day Classic, positioning before a decisive climb or cobbled sector matters. A stage race adds the changing GC standings to each day’s action.
| What you enjoy | Race to consider |
|---|---|
| Rough cobbles and one-day pressure | Paris-Roubaix Femmes |
| Steep cobbled climbs | Tour of Flanders Women |
| Gravel and distinctive scenery | Strade Bianche Donne |
| Hilly one-day racing | Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes or La Flèche Wallonne |
| An unfolding overall contest | Tour de France Femmes, Giro or Vuelta |
| Women’s racing heritage | Trofeo Alfredo Binda |

How to check race dates and watch from the United States

Dates, classifications, routes and broadcast arrangements change by edition, and the UCI’s own calendar announcements show it.
The UCI’s June 2025 calendar announcement initially listed 28 Women’s WorldTour events and 77 racing days for 2026. Its January 2026 season overview described 27 events, including 16 one-day races and 11 stage races.
Later revisions affected Tour de Suisse Women, Copenhagen Sprint and the classification of Simac Ladies Tour. The women’s Tour of Guangxi was canceled for 2026.
The original 2027 Women’s WorldTour announcement left La Vuelta Femenina’s date to be confirmed. The UCI’s September 23, 2026 update scheduled the race for October 3 to 10, 2027.
US viewers need a separate broadcast check. Coverage can mean live broadcasts, recaps or replays, and rights depend on the country and edition.
In a September 26, 2026 World Championships race thread on r/peloton, a US spectator complained about that championship’s coverage, saying the only way to watch it in the U.S. was through Flobikes.

Make two checks before you pick a race:
- Confirm the event and edition. Consult the official UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar and the event organizer’s listing for the scheduled date and status. Use the separate championship listing for Worlds or the Olympics.
- Confirm coverage in the United States. Look for the organizer’s official US broadcast information or an authorized rights-holder listing. Check whether it covers the full race live, selected portions, recaps or replays, and which subscription terms apply.
