As I focus on community building, placemaking and urban development, the conversation typically moves to the idea of “third space”. Where are you drawn towards to spend your free time? For some, it is the coffee shop, local pub, a friend’s backyard, etc.
In community building, the third place (or third space) is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home (“first place“) and the office (“second place“). Examples of third places would be environments such as cafes, clubs, public libraries, or parks. – Wiki
My 3rd space has always been the bike. It is my therapy, my sanctionary, my freedom and my home.
It is easy to get in debates of bike product, bike setups, and even the categories of biking – but I believe that all of us find some type of 3rd space in cycling that keeps us drawn in and addicted to the feelings that you find on two wheels.
Is cycling your third place and if not – what is?
