As I focus on community building, placemaking and urban development, the conversation typically moves to the idea of “third space”. Where are you drawn towards to spend your free time? For some, it is the coffee shop, local pub, a friend’s backyard, etc.
In community building, the third place (or third space) is the social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home (“first place“) and the office (“second place“). Examples of third places would be environments such as cafes, clubs, public libraries, or parks. – Wiki
My 3rd space has always been the bike. It is my therapy, my sanctionary, my freedom and my home.
It is easy to get in debates of bike product, bike setups, and even the categories of biking – but I believe that all of us find some type of 3rd space in cycling that keeps us drawn in and addicted to the feelings that you find on two wheels.
Is cycling your third place and if not – what is?
cycling has always been my third place, but i have never known it by that name. As far back as I can remember being on my bike has brought me freedom, a sense of calm, the notion that I can get myself anywhere and do anything. When I lost my car due to bankruptcy I still had my bike and I rode 30miles to work each day. When I lost my mom I had my bike to ride and cry tears that were swept away by the wind. When I ride the rough edges of my life are worn smooth. I think, ponder, debate and process all the complications of everyday life and at the end I am thankful for the work and the sweat it took to get me back home.
I started riding bikes in 1957 to get a paper route and make some money. I was 10. I’m in me 60th year of riding and have gotten so much good from riding over the years. Trips, adventures, fun days, exploring new places when I move. I ride a cargo bike now. I gave up my car over 2 years ago. Live this and want to help others get a bike in there life.
