We are cargo bike believers at Women’s Cycling. Across our garages, we have over 5 cargo bikes of all shapes and sizes. One of the biggest hurdles of cargo bikes is the size. They take up a lot of space and it’s hard to get into elevators, stairs or cars. If your bike needs service you typically have to borrow a friends truck or hope the bike shop has a pickup service. Last week Tern, known for their folding bikes, released the Tern GSD COMPACT Electric Cargo Bike that claims it can carry two kids and has room for two batteries onboard.

What Makes the Tern GSD Electric Cargo Bike Special?
The price for the Tern GSD is in line with most cargo hauling electric cargo bikes starting around $4,000-4,2000. What makes this so unique is the size, two motors options to pick from, the accessories and that this can tuck nicely under apartment stairs, a minivan or potentially in railcar for a true multi-modal commute.
The lower weight should, in theory, make this easier to ride when hauling weight. Can you tell we are getting excited? It isn’t too often that the cargo bike market is reinvented. There are front loading bikes, long tail bikes, 3 wheelers and now a compact version with more bells and whistles than most.

More to Come
This is one of the first products this season we are biting at the bit to try out. We have so many questions that can only be solved by a test ride.
How will it handle? How close will the kid’s legs be to the main rider and the chain? How does the front handle weight in the basket? How do the two batteries work? Who would need a 400 vs 900-watt motor? How easy are the accessories to install?
Have you ridden one? Let us know!
